Inner Harbor, Baltimore, ca.1906-1997

Inner Harbor, Baltimore
Looking north from Federal Hill.

ca. 1906
In the early 1900's, piers along Baltimore's inner harbor were a major part of the city's commercial base. On the left, steamers can be seen docked along the Light Street piers. One steamer company, the Old Bay Line, had operated in the harbor since 1840. The Pratt Street piers, center, are home to Chesapeake Bay oyster fleets and the United Fruit Company. In February 1904, a fire consumed much of Baltimore and the buildings along the inner harbor. Debris from the conflagration is still present along the Pratt Street piers. Beyond the waterfront, the tall, white Maryland Trust Building on the extreme left and the taller Continental Trust Building can be seen. Both of these structures were burned inside and out during the fire. The domed building to the right of center is the Baltimore City Hall.

1997
After World War II, the inner harbor ceased to be the primary port of entry to Baltimore. The skyline of Baltimore is now dominated by modern glass and steel structures. Still a major commercial base for the city, Inner Harbor's economy is now largely based on tourism. The Marina at Inner Harbor in the foreground is now home to private pleasure boats where large commercial ships once berthed. The Old Bay Line ceased operations in 1959. Now occupying the corner of Inner Harbor along Pratt and Light Streets are the Pavilions at Harborplace containing restaurants and retail shops, completed in 1980. The tall building to the right of center is the Baltimore World Trade Center. On the extreme right, the USS Torsk, a World War II submarine, is permanently docked alongside the Baltimore National Aquarium (out of image) which opened in 1981 and is located where the Merchants and Miners Transportation Company operated a pier.
