Pennsylvania Avenue, ca.1864-1998

Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC
Looking southeast down Pennsylvania Avenue, NW from the Treasury Building toward the United States Capitol.

ca. 1864
Pennsylvania Avenue during the Civil War was a dirt road dominated by Federal-style row houses constructed early in the 19th century. Tracks from horse-drawn streetcars run down the center of the avenue, turning north on 15th Street. On the left, behind the trees, the roof to Willard's Hotel can be seen. It was in this hotel in 1861 that Julia Ward Howe wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." The new dome of the Capitol can be seen in the distance.

1998
Although it was almost completely transformed, the appearance of "America's Main Street" has been completely transformed over 130 years. Gone are the row houses and streetcars, replaced by the Ronald Reagan World Trade Center, the old Post Office shopping mall, other large buildings and modern transportation. Even the street itself was changed with the placement of Freedom Plaza in the former path of the Avenue. On the site of the old Willard Hotel now stands the Willard Intercontinental Hotel, still one of Washington's most prestigious, with the Hotel Washington Hotel next door on the corner, the oldest continuously operating hotel in the city.
