Federal Triangle, Washington, DC
Looking northeast from the Washington Monument.
ca. 1910
The Post Office Building, completed in 1899, in the center of this view seems out of place among the smaller, two- and three-story buildings that constituted the majority of the structures along Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Above and to the right of the Post Office, the Pension Building, constructed between 1882 and 1887, can be seen with the newly constructed Union Station, finished in 1907, in the distance on the extreme right. At the lower left of the photograph, the Pepco powerhouse occupies the corner of 14th Street and B Street, NW.
1997
With the exception of the old Post Office, which is still the tallest building in Washington, all the commercial and residential structures between Pennsylvania Avenue and Constitution Avenue (formally B Street), NW, have been replaced with massive government buildings. Much of this change is a result of the Federal Triangle Project that began in 1928. The Post Office Building displaced the Pepco powerhouse and boasts the Internal Revenue Service Building as its neighbor, while the Museum of American History, built in 1964, occupies the lower right of the scene. The old Pension Building, now the National Building Museum, and Union Station are still visible nestled among large modern structures.
