The White House, ca.1910-1997

The White House
Looking north from the Washington Monument.

ca. 1910
Just to the left of center in this view is the oldest Federal building in Washington, The White House. Completed in 1800, it remained the largest residence in the United States until the Civil War. The Greek Revival structure to its right is the Treasury Building, built between 1842 and 1875. The oval area in the foreground of the scene is the ellipse, known in the 19th century as the "White Lot" because of the white fence at the south end of the White House lawn that separated it from a pasture. At the extreme left of the photograph is the State, War and Navy Building, completed in 1888. Stretching off into the distance above the White House is 16th Street, NW, one of the most exclusive residential corridors in Washington at the turn of the century.

1997
The lower half of the scene looks remarkably similar eighty-seven years hence, while the upper half has changed dramatically. The State, War and Navy Building, now the Old Executive Office Building, is still visible to the left of the White House. In the ellipse, now encircled by a road and parking area, can be seen the National Christmas Tree. The two streets on either side of the White House, East and West Executive Avenues, have both been closed to automobile traffic; the latter being incorporated into the White House grounds and the former only open to pedestrians. In the lower right in the photograph, the Department of Commerce building has displaced the much smaller stuctures that previously dotted the area. Development dominates the entire upper half of the photograph, leaving the area much more urban and much less exclusive.
