Market Square, Washington, DC
Looking southeast down Pennsylvania Avenue, NW from 9th Street
toward the United States Capitol.
1901
A bustling street scene on Pennsylvania Avenue is shown at the turn
of the century. Located just out of view to the right is the old
Center Market, a massive brick two-block long building erected in 1871
that accommodated up to 1,000 vendors and 30 produce wagons from which
the square derived its name. Making their way through the pedestrians,
horses and wagons are two cars from Washington's former trolley system.
The building with two spires in the center of the view housed Mathew
Brady's studio during the Civil War.
1993
The old Center Market was demolished in 1931 and replaced by the
National Archives building in 1937, resulting in a much less active
scene. The building formally occupied by Mathew Brady is still
standing, as is its neighbor. Where retail buildings once stood to the
left of the scene are a portion of the Navy Memorial, completed in
1993, and a luxury apartment building . In the distance, the statue
Freedom atop the Capitol dome is enveloped by scaffolding as it
was being prepared for removal and restoration.
