U.S. Capitol 1861-1998

U.S. Capitol
Looking southwest from Senate side of Capitol grounds.

1861
The Capitol building was completed in 1826 and included a low wooden dome covered with copper. By 1850, the membership of Congress had increased to more than twice its original size. This growth necessitated the construction of two new wings to accomodate the additional representatives and senators. The old copper dome was dwarfed by the massive new wings and it was decided that it should be replaced by one more proportionate to the larger size of the renovated Capitol. The monumental steps, pediment and pillars had not yet been installed. In the foreground can be seen marble to be used in the construction that littered the Capitol grounds.

1998
The majestic cast iron dome was topped by the Statue of Freedom at the end of 1863 and the extension project was completed by 1868. The monumental steps flow down from the Senate chamber to the paved area of the Captiol grounds. Although the center section of the Capitol below the dome appears to be the same as the 1861 image, it is not; between 1958 and 1962, a new marble East Front was constructed 32-1/2 feet east of old sandstone front. In the foreground are cement flower pots placed in the driveway to the Capitol as a security measure.
