Philadelphia City Hall
Looking north on South Broad Street from Spruce Street.
1904
Construction of the Philadelphia City Hall began in 1871 after the voters of Philadelphia selected Penn Square as its location. Originally known as "Center Square," it is the geographical center of William Penn's original plan for Philadelphia. Construction of the building took 30 years. Upon completion, it stood 510 feet tall and is the largest municipal building in the United States. The first building on the left is the Academy of Music which opened in 1857. The large French Renaissance building beyond the Academy is the Bellevue Stratford Hotel, completed in 1904. On the right is the Broad Street Theater.
1998
The Philadelphia City Hall still dominates the view. Restoration of the landmark building began in 1989. On the left, the 19th century Acadamy of Music opera house still stands and is the oldest venue in the United States still used for its original purpose. The Bellevue Hotel still stands and was renovated in 1988 and now includes offices, shops and the Park Hyatt hotel. The right side of South Broad Street is virtually unrecognizable from the former view. Although the Doubletree Hotel now occupy the site of the Broad Street Theater, other theaters are so prolific on Broad Street that it is also referred to as Avenue of the Arts.
