Ferry Building, San Francisco, 1906-1998

The Ferry Building, San Francisco
Looking northeast down Market Street from Fremont Street.

1906
On April 18, 1906, an earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter Scale struck San Francisco. The massive quake and the resulting fire which burned for four days killed more than 3,000 people. 28,000 buildings were destroyed which left 225,000 of the city's 400,000 people homeless. Through the smoke of the smoldering rubble, the Ferry Building can be seen at the foot of Market Street. Completed just eight years earlier, the Ferry Building survived the earthquake and fire and became the site of one of many makeshift camps for the survivors.

1998
100 years after its completion, the Ferry Building still stands at the foot of Market Street. In addition to surviving the 1906 quake, the building survived the 7.09 quake that caused a great deal of damage in 1989. The destroyed structures along Market Street have been replaced with modern buildings. In the center of the street, tracks still carry trollies down Market.
